What data we collect and why
There is no account to register for here, and simply browsing the site gives us none of your name, payment details or any other personal identifier. We rely on Matomo as our analytics tool to see which pages people open and how the site is performing as a whole. It shows us which guides readers like, where visitors tend to run into trouble, and what needs fixing. In concrete terms, Matomo records details such as:
- Page views: which pages you open and the sequence you move through them in.
- Approximate location: normally your country or region, derived from your IP address.
- Device and browser: your device type, screen size, operating system and the browser in use.
- Referring site: the website or search engine that sent you our way.
All of this exists solely to improve the site. We never sell it, and it is never used to build an advertising profile of you or to figure out who you are. Wherever we can, we set Matomo up to keep less identifying information, and that includes cutting back full IP addresses.
Cookies
A cookie is nothing more than a small text file a website can store in your browser. We may set one to keep the site working smoothly and to drive the analytics described above (to recognise whether you have visited before, for example). You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings whenever you wish, although doing so may leave parts of the site not working as they should.

Write to [email protected] and we will see whatever you put in the message, which is typically your email address and the details of your enquiry. We use it purely to reply to you and to act on feedback or corrections. It is never used for marketing, and we never hand it to anyone else for that sort of purpose.
Data retention
We retain analytics data only for as long as it genuinely helps us spot trends and make the site better, after which it is either deleted or anonymised further. Emails remain with us for as long as it takes to resolve your enquiry, plus a reasonable stretch afterwards for our records. Third-party services
To work properly the site depends on a few third-party resources, web fonts among them. Just like the analytics, these services may collect basic technical information (your IP address and browser, for example) simply as part of delivering their content to you. We make a real effort to choose providers known for handling data responsibly, though of course we have no say over how they run things.
Changes to this policy
This policy is not fixed forever. From time to time we may update it as the site changes or as we swap out the tools behind it, and each time that happens we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of the page. It is worth checking back here now and then.
